Project Overview:
The visual language, graphic design, messaging, content texts, maps, and product design for Tartu’s new wayfinding system were developed with a strong focus on urban integration, visibility, and inclusivity. Every element—from signage and public transport information carriers to bike-sharing totems—has been designed to harmonize with the cityscape while ensuring clarity and accessibility for all users. This project embodies a thoughtful approach to wayfinding, where aesthetics meet functionality to enhance the urban experience.

Key Features:

  • Comprehensive Signage Network – A diverse system that includes large illuminated city maps, medium-sized information pillars, and smaller directional signs at street corners.

  • Strategic Citywide Placement – Seven signs have been installed from Ülejõe Park to Vaksali Bridge, with six more planned at key city hubs.

  • Multi-Purpose Information Pillars – Medium-sized pillars display Tartu’s map alongside engaging stories about the surrounding area.

  • Enhanced Urban Readability – Designed to improve navigation and accessibility, making the cityscape clearer and more user-friendly.

  • Integrated Guide Information – Larger and medium-sized signs provide historical and location-specific insights, enriching the urban experience.

  • Pedestrian- and Cyclist-Friendly – Developed based on a 2018 user study to support walking and cycling routes.

  • Tested and Refined Design – Initial prototypes were installed in 2021 at Raekoja Plats and Rüütli Street, with user feedback shaping the final implementation.

  • Ongoing Development – The system is continuously expanding to further enhance wayfinding across Tartu.

  • Consistent Visual Identity – Designed in harmony with Tartu’s bike-sharing information pillars and public transport stops for a cohesive urban aesthetic.

  • Accessibility Features – Larger 15-minute wayfinding signs include a concrete compass embedded in the ground for orientation, along with a raised tactile stone surface to help visually impaired individuals recognize the starting point of the signage.

  • Designed by Experts – Created by Disainiosakond and Stuudio Stuudio, with guide texts developed in collaboration with Tartu City Library.
